Still Waiting For Your Passport?
Temporary Passport Regulation expires September 30, 2007
The temporary passport policy enacted back on June 8th by the U.S. State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, will expire as previously announced, on September 30th. Under this temporary policy, travelers were permitted to exit and enter the United States using government issued photo ID’s, if they showed a valid proof of application for a passport. Beginning October 1st, a valid passport is required to exit and enter the United States.
Travelers are advised to check with consulates in the country they are visiting to determine if other documentation is required to enter their country. You can also check the State Department’s website for Consular Information Sheets.
Since new passport regulations went into effect. Government offices have been flooded with passport applications, and lengthy processing times have added to traveler’s frustrations. The State Dept. estimates it will issue as many as 17 million passports this year.
Travel agents should advise their customers to apply for passports as soon as possible, if they have not done so already. For those travelers with passports about to expire, you can hurry the process along by working through a private passport expeditor. These expediters can often get a passport processed the same day. "Business is up 30 percent this year already," says Jeffrey Fine, president of CIBT, one of the largest expediters. It will cost you up to $75.00 or more for this service, however because expediters are allowed a certain number of rush applications per day, their service is valuable to those travelers who need to rush their application through the process.
