Prepare For Holiday Travel
The holidays are fast approaching and with it comes some of the heaviest travel days of the year. This means long lines, delays, and yes, many frustrated travelers. Here are some travel tips to help you make the best of the season and your travels.
Flexibility Is Key
Be flexible with your travel plans and either go a day or so early or return home a day latter. This may help with the crowds at the airport and may even save you a couple of dollars.
Be Prepared
Call or check online to see if your flight is on schedule or if there are any delays. Arrive at the airport with plenty of time. Lines will be long at both the check in counter and at airport security. Make sure any liquids and gels (travel-size is preferred) in your carry-on are all in one quart size zip lock bag. Keep you boarding pass and picture ID in your hand as you go through security.
To speed things along when going through security these items will need to be place in the security tray.
- Shoes – wear slip-ons for quickness
- Zip lock bag with liquids
- Laptops
- Remove all contents from your pockets (cell phone, pagers, wallets, change, etc). Have a extra zip lock available and put everything in it while you wait in line. You can then put it in your carry-on and not fumble with several little items.
- Belts and jackets ( even suit coats and blazer should be removed)
If you are packing gifts in your carry-on, they should be unwrapped or the keep in mind that the TSA officers have the right to unwrap if they feel it is necessary. Visit the TSA’s web site for a detailed list of what can and can not be packed in your carry-on luggage. www.tsa.gov
Security will be enforced for the safety of all travelers, so don’t expect any special treatment. It is just best to smile and go with the flow!
Tech Before You Leave
Use a GPS or map quest to make the most of your drive time. Check the weather web sites before you leave, many have information on delays for air or rail travel and road conditions updated hourly.
Family Time
Families traveling with small children should arrive at the airport early enough to take advantage of pre-boarding. This will allow plenty of time for your children to settle in. Bring lots of books, games, portable dvd player with movies, paper and crayons and snacks to keep children occupied in case of a delay.
Stay Covered
It is always good to consider travel insurance especially during the holidays. Hopefully you will never use it, but it does lend to peace of mind and can be a huge help with lost or delayed baggage, cancelled flights or unexpected trip interruptions like illness.
Use A Travel Agent
Always use a travel agent to help make the most of your trip. They offer expertise and lots of tips. They can also assist if needed while you are on the road and make sure every goes smoothly. You can find a professional travel agent at www.specialtytravelagents.com
