Scottish Tearoom Tours
Shannon McDonald Tate
Even though I grew up in the States every afternoon we would arrive home from school to a wonderful afternoon tea as was traditional in our ancestral Scotland. My mother and sister had been busy preparing wonderful treats such as lemon curd tarts, sticky gingerbread with vanilla sauce, millionaire's shortbread and fresh scones with jam and cream. This would tide us over until a late supper when my father returned home from work.
Unfortunately after growing up I allowed my busy life style to interfere with this lovely traditional until about 10 years ago when I opened up a wee Scottish Tearoom in Washington State. It was at this time that I started spending a lot of time in Scotland and the rest of the British Isles as well. I was delighted to see that this tradition was enjoying a resurgence here as well and everywhere I traveled I would find traditional afternoon teas, cream teas and high tea suppers offered up. The tearoom itself had enjoyed a come back and they dotted the countryside at every turn.
I was thrilled as I had recently decided to offer tours to Scotland and the idea of "Scottish Dream Tours" was born. I wanted to bring the wonderful traditions of my fatherland to travelers from all over the world and introduce them to the fascinating ritual of tea. I then knew that our main tour offering would be tearoom tours. Our tearoom tours are not just about tearooms though. They are full of history, castles, pubs, music, gardens and the warm wonderful people of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. As you have to eat anyway we love to introduce you to our favorite places for tea. From the proper afternoon tea to the informal cream tea to a high tea supper we will show you the very best that the British Isles has to offer in a traditional manner that they made famous!
