Egypt

Egypt is a country full of history. Egypt was the birthplace of one of the greatest civilizations of all time, and played a large roll in the development of the ancient world.

To simply say the Karnak Temple in Luxor is big is an understatement. The temple is gigantic, covering over 200 acres. The temple was built as a gift to the sun god, and each new pharaoh added to the building, making it the large complex it is today. The enormous columns in the threshold show exactly how impressive the craftsmanship of the Egyptians was. These columns would have held up the roof, when it still existed. Pieces of the ramps used to get stones on top of the walls are still visible, as well as multicolored hieroglyphs on the columns. In the courtyard are two obelisks, one being a different color halfway down. Tuthmosis III, in his anger against Queen Hatshepsut, built a wall around it, as destroying it would disrespect the gods. He did this to keep people from acknowledging Hatshepsut as the ruler of Egypt after she took his reign.

In Cairo lies one of the oldest places of worship in the world. The Mohamed Ali Mosque, or Citadel. The Citadel is built on the highest point in the city, and is easily visible from almost anywhere. The mosque is an impressive size, and has several towers which provide wonderful views of the city. The building is built in the same style as Ottoman mosques, and resembles the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul.

Just outside of Luxor lies the Valley of the Kings, the site made famous by the discovery of King Tut's tomb. Many different Egyptian royals have made this valley their final resting place, and the tombs are quite impressive. The tomb of Tuthmosis III is here, and features impressive artwork inside. Another famous king buried here is Ramses IX. The biggest sight here by far is the tomb of King Tut, where the sarcophagus and mummy have been left. There are an estimated 150 tombs in the valley, but only 70 have been unearthed so far.
